Marcelo is confident that government measures for incomes “will be positive”

The President of the Republic stated on Wednesday that he trusts that the measures taken by the government regarding rents “will be positive”, refusing to say more on the issue, which he referred to the executive branch.

When Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to journalists at a hotel in Montreal, Canada, when asked if he already knows what the government’s plans are regarding rental prices, he replied: “This is of course the responsibility of the government, which is responsible for determining the measures to be taken.”

“And I am sure that they will be positive and that they will contribute to facing a situation that is not only Portuguese, broader, but also affects Portuguese society”added the head of state.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in Canada on Wednesday for a five-day official visit to this country.

The Prime Minister, António Costa, said on Wednesday that “the government is currently evaluating a brake on rental prices and will meet with associations of owners and tenants to “find the value as close as possible to the possibilities”. of families and the value established by law.

‘We are going to listen to the sector associations, we are going to think about the estimated inflation for this year’said António Costa, who declined to provide figures and argued that this must be a “balanced solution” that does not discourage owners or create situations of social disruption.

The value of rental prices could rise by 6.94% in 2024 if the government does not cap updates as it did this year, according to August inflation figures recently released by the National Statistics Institute ( INE).
