The head of state will travel from Toronto to New York at the end of the day next Sunday, after his five-day official visit to Canada, dedicated to the Portuguese expatriate communities in this country.
According to the agenda released by the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will speak on Tuesday on the first day of the annual general debate of this 78th session of the UN General Assembly, and later at a reception hosted by the President . of the United States of America, Joe Biden.
It will be his fifth intervention representing Portugal in the annual general debate between Heads of State and Government of the 193 Member States of the United Nations (UN) in New York, in which he also participated in 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2021.
On Monday, in addition to meeting with UN Secretary General António Guterres, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will meet with UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis.
In New York, where he will remain until Friday, the head of state will participate in summits on sustainable development and climate action.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will also meet this week with representatives of Portuguese communities in the North American states of New York and New Jersey.
The theme of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly is “Rebuilding trust and reviving global solidarity: accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all people “.
