Marcelo and criticism of comment about cleavage: ‘It was not sexist at all’

“It wasn’t a sexist comment, it didn’t occur to me, either to that young girl or to the old ladies. It wasn’t sexist at all”the head of state declared in response to journalists in Toronto during his official visit to Canada.

In a conversation with a young woman and her mother, Portuguese emigrants in Canada, in Montreal, Thursday, filmed by RTP, the President of the Republic noted: “The daughter still has the flu, did you see that, with the cleavage?”

When Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was questioned by journalists in Toronto today about the criticism his comment provoked in Portugal, he seemed surprised: “Don’t tell me. I don’t even know what to respond to.”

The President of the Republic said that “at the end of the walk through the Portuguese part of Montreal it started to rain, it was cold”, and that he warned about this “several elderly ladies, one of whom he carried by the arm, and others younger”.

“I told several people but apparently only the young woman was filmed: be careful because you still have a cold – I had that too,” he added.
