An outfit that the head of the RN does not appreciate. The person in charge of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella, reacted this Sunday on “BFM Politique” to the publication on Saturday on Instagram of footballer Karim Benzema with the Saudi team.
“I think he is a traveling companion of Islamist ideology,” accuses the leader of the RN, about the player who has been wearing the Al-Ittihad club shirt for several months.
“At least he is coherent. He wants an Islamist lifestyle, he went to Saudi Arabia,” the MEP continues.
One post received more than 2.5 million likes
The former French international, who left Real Madrid for a club in Saudi Arabia, published a photo of himself on his Instagram account on Saturday in which he appears in traditional Saudi clothing.
“Look at the life we have. Happy Saudi National Day,” he wrote in the caption of a post that garnered more than 2.5 million likes.
Player departures from Saudi Arabia have increased in recent months, leading to XXL salaries and, at times, ambassadorships for the Gulf monarchy.
An accusation already made by Damien Rieu
The far-right activist Damien Rieu, an unsuccessful candidate for the Reconquista in the 2022 legislative elections in Nice, had already accused Karim Benzema of being a carrier of Islamist ideology.
In 2020, he tweeted a photo montage of the player pointing his finger at the sky alongside armed Islamist fighters. “I think Benzema wants to send us a message,” he added.
Tried for defamation, Damien Rieu was acquitted this week by the Lyon criminal court because this message, even defamatory, could benefit from good faith.
