PAN ensures majority. History of the island PSD criticizes Montenegro

Miguel Albuquerque, leader of the PSD-Madeira, already has a stable governance solution that he can present tomorrow to the representative of the republic in the region, Irineu Barreto, who will invite him to form a new government. Today the hearings begin for the parties that won parliamentary seats (the PSD will be the last to be heard).

The regional executive will consist only of personalities from the two parties that won the regional coalition elections last Sunday, PSD and CDS, but a parliamentary influence agreement signed this Tuesday with the PAN will allow, according to Albuquerque, to ” stability platform” for the next four years in the autonomous region. The coalition won the parliamentary elections, but by electing only 23 deputies it fell just short of an absolute majority (24 out of a total of 47 elected representatives).

The agreement with the PAN, which managed to elect the head of the list, Mónica Freitas, gives the PSD-CDS coalition the votes needed for an absolute majority. Left out of the agreement was the Liberal Initiative, which, like the PAN, had also managed to be elected. Albuquerque declined to explain why he chose to negotiate with PAN instead of IL: “I chose because I chose.”

At a press conference in Funchal, Mónica Freitas confirmed the agreement and the measures it includes (see list below), also ensuring that it has a duration of four years and has only parliamentary impact (in other words: the participation of the PAN to the Regional Government).

“With this step, we also take on the responsibility of being the great buffer of the extreme right and the guarantor of democracy in Madeira. Through this commitment we will work to adopt our measures in the Madeira Regional Assembly and continue to work here with all other parties, making their proposals also valid,” said the (now) regional delegate of the PAN at Madeira.

Chega – who, despite having elected four regional deputies, is far from any government solution in Madeira – reacted with the usual anger. André Ventura said that the PSD has committed a “profound betrayal of the right” with this agreement.

“It takes everything for the PSD to retain power” and “this was necessary to understand how degraded the panorama of national politics is,” he said. “It will not surprise anyone if in other regional elections or in parliamentary elections the PSD understands that it can form a coalition with the PAN, the BE or the PCP for any agreement that avoids governability with Chega.”

The Liberal Initiative also did not like to see itself removed from a government solution. “The statements already made public indicating that the PSD-Madeira has chosen the easiest route accurately reflect the demanding and reformist character of the Liberal Initiative, which, it is concluded, the PSD-Madeira was unable to follow,” the spokesperson said. Liberals, in a joint statement signed by the regional leader, Nuno Morna, and the national leader, Rui Rocha.

In the same position, IL assured that it had made itself available to PSD-Madeira to discuss “measure by measure” and “budget by budget” a “stable and more liberal government” for the region.

However, the PSD preferred, instead of “a reformist path, aimed at economic, political and social freedom”, a “prohibitionist, sectarian path, limiting economic activity linked to tourism, dirigistic and hostile to the rural world “.

Amaral and Jardim were amazed

Meanwhile, the two historical leaders of the PSD in Madeira and the Azores, Alberto João Jardim and João Bosco Mota Amaral respectively, expressed their surprise and criticism of the way the PSD national leader, Luís Montenegro, tried to usurp on Sunday evening , in Funchal, of the results of the regional PSD. They were “very freshmen” because there was nothing to celebrate. “There was no celebration because there was no victory. It was an election where everyone lost. It is a punishment for the PSD and the PS. It is the uprising of the middle class.”

Mota Amaral believed that Montenegro was “on tiptoe” to “appear on television”. “I do not remember any national party leaders being present on previous election nights in Funchal,” he opined in an article published in the Azores press.
