CDS-PP “explicitly demarcates itself from the agreement” between PSD and PAN

The chairman of the CDS-PP sent a letter to activists this Thursday in which he expressly demarcated the party from the parliamentary influence agreement signed in Madeira and indicated that it is up to the centrist regional structure to decide on participation in the government of the autonomous region.

The letter, which the Lusa agency had access to, was sent after a meeting of the party’s executive committee, which took place on Wednesday evening.

“The CDS-PP expressly deviates from the agreement signed between the PSD-Madeira and the PAN. However, it is the sole responsibility of the CDS-Madeira, under the terms of the party’s statutes and within the framework of its regional autonomy, to decide on the agreement and participation in the regional government of Madeira,” writes Nuno Melo .

The president of the CDS-PP reiterates that the party’s regional structure “did not participate in this parliamentary influence agreement”, a “bilateral agreement celebrated only between the PSD – Madeira and the PAN”.

“The only agreement that CDS-Madeira signed was with PSD-Madeira on the pre-electoral coalition Somos Madeira,” he said.

The chairman of the CDS-PP also points out that the PAN is “a political opponent” of his party.

“The CDS-PP, as a party of the center right and the democratic right, has a doctrinal and ideological vision that is completely opposite and antagonistic to that of the PAN with regard to personalism, the rural world, traditions and customs and a whole way of life in society ”, he emphasizes.

Nuno Melo also believes that “it would be possible to look for another alternative to guarantee the governability of the region in the center-right political space.”

The MEP claims that it would “have the benefit of signaling to the electorate and the country that there is a possible and concerted effort by the centre-right to assume, with stability and coherence, the responsibilities and viability of a non-socialist government ” and believes that this was “the largely majority vote of Madeirans”.

“The CDS-PP will continue to fight for the flags of Christian Democracy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and throughout the country, without compromise in defending our values and fighting all leftist and populism,” he guarantees.

In this letter to activists, Nuno Melo also highlights the result achieved by the Somos Madeira coalition (PSD/CDS-PP) – 43.13% of the votes and 23 deputies – and, specifically, the fact that the CDS-PP maintained the three mandates he obtained four years ago on his own lists.

Despite this “important victory”, the coalition did not achieve an absolute majority, something which, according to the CDS-PP leader, “is essentially due to a large fragmentation of the votes”.

“Congratulations to CDS-Madeira and the team led by Rui Barreto for the results achieved,” he said.

The leader of the CDS-PP also points out that “the PS has suffered a resounding defeat” and believes that “it is not acceptable that the Secretary General of the PS, António Costa, is spared from expressing the socialist electoral disaster” .

The Somos Madeira coalition (PSD/CDS-PP) won the regional parliamentary elections in Madeira on Sunday, but failed to obtain an absolute majority with one deputy, which requires it to win 24 of the 47 seats in the parliament of the archipelago.

The elected PAN deputy, Mónica Freitas, announced on Tuesday that she has signed a four-year parliamentary advocacy agreement with the PSD, allowing an absolute majority in the hemisphere, which was confirmed by the President of the PSD/Madeira and the regional government . Miguel Albuquerque.

In statements to Lusa on Tuesday, he said: the chairman of the CDS-PP had pointed out that the parliamentary influence agreement in Madeira had been reached between PSD and PAN, leaving the centrists “on the sidelines”, and pointed out that he would have preferred an agreement with the Liberal Initiative.

The next day, the leader of the CDS-PP/Madeira indicated that the party had not participated in the negotiations on the agreement and downplayed the dissatisfaction expressed by the party chairman over the choice of the PAN, to the detriment of the Liberal Initiative.

Rui Barreto, number two on the coalition list of Somos Madeira, believed that the issues that the party led by Inês de Sousa Real “raises at the national level and which are contrary to the national CDS, have no reason to to exist in the Autonomous Region of Madeira”.

“On the continent, I understand, the national leader of the CDS has all the legitimacy and authority to express opinions,” said Rui Barreto, adding: “On Madeira, the CDS/Madeira also has its autonomy, taking into account with the specific regional characteristics, which are neither less nor more or less equal to the national ones, decide what is best in the interests of Madeira and Porto Santo”.

Madeira’s centrist leader stressed that the CDS-PP has a “stable commitment agreement with the PSD”, concluded in 2019, when the PSD lost its absolute majority in the autonomous region for the first time, and said that after Sunday’s elections the Somos The Madeira coalition has “full political and constitutional conditions to form a government and present a government programme”.
