The president of the republic defended today that support measures for households and businesses to deal with inflation should be agreed at European level, and said he is waiting for the package that the government will announce.
“I think that a series of measures should be considered in all countries at the moment. The ideal would be that it be agreed at European level, otherwise inequalities in Europe will increase,” replied journalist Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa after leaving the Conferences of Estoril, when asked about Spain’s announcement that it will reduce VAT on gas.
In the opinion of the President of the Republic, these measures should “cover all areas where it is possible, depending on the situation of each country”, so that, at a time when the price of energy is rising and inflation in other countries goods, ” this creates not the problems it can create or is already starting to create in the lives of people, families and businesses”.
“We’ll see. This is a government decision. We’ll see when it will come out and what it will be like,” he said, when asked if he expects a robust package of measures from António Costa’s government.
The extraordinary council of ministers to approve the package of measures to support household income in the face of inflation will take place on Monday, Prime Minister António Costa announced this week.
