The PCP secretary general on Monday accused the government of following a path that included dismantling the National Health Service and closing hospital wards.
Paulo Raimundo spoke during a contact action with users of the Quinta da Lomba Health Center in Barreiro, as part of the “Live better in our country” campaign, where he was confronted with a long line of patients to get an appointment.
The first person in line had been at the door of the health center since half past twelve to guarantee one of the 49 available places for next Monday.
“It is shocking to see a man of almost seventy years old, from Canada, arriving here at half past twelve for an appointment. It is not worth commenting much more because the image is in itself worth it,” he said.
The PCP General Secretary stated that this is one of the many situations he has seen on the ground during the various visits he has made, as these are examples of a path being followed by the government to dismantle the National Health Service.
Asked about the role of the executive leadership of the SNS, Paulo Raimundo said this fits into the government’s objectives to dismantle the SNS, “with great speed in this objective.”
Solving these problems, he said, is about valuing health workers, respecting them and creating conditions in which they can work.
“Things just haven’t gotten any worse. We must create the conditions in which they can establish themselves in the National Health Service, work and be financed,” he said, adding that they are the ones who support the SNS.
