Minister promises growth in education in OE2024

The Minister of Education, João Costa, promised on Monday a state budget (OE) for growth in the sector for 2024 and sent details for the presentation on Tuesday.

“We still have an OE that, as has been the case since 2015, continues to grow in education,” he said on the sidelines of an official visit to Cape Verde.

“Until last year we already had a consolidated growth of 36% in investment and education expenditure and this growth is now continuing, but it is up to the Minister of Finance to deliver the good news about our OE,” he added.

Asked by Lusa about the availability of additional support for teachers’ housing and travel to the Lisbon and Algarve regions, João Costa declined to provide details.

The 2023/2024 school year started about a month ago and the lack of teachers mainly affects schools in those two regions, which complain of high costs.

As a result, the year started with many students without classes in various subjects.

The Minister of Education, João Costa, reiterated that the problem “has been identified”, a situation that is “not new”, guaranteeing that the government is developing various measures to try to overcome the problem.
