Lisbon Chamber approves vote to condemn PCP for announcing November 25 celebration

The PCP councilors of the Lisbon City Council (CML), João Ferreira and Ana Jara, presented this Wednesday, during the closed meeting of the Executive, a condemnation vote on the announcement of the November 25 celebrations, approved by votes in favor of PS, BE, PCP, Citizens for Lisbon and Free, and against PSD and CDS-PP.

In the document, the Communist Council recalled that on October 5 “During the ceremony commemorating the 113th anniversary of the founding of the Republic, the city of Lisbon was surprised by an announcement from the President of the CML, Carlos Moedas: ‘I take this opportunity to announce that, in addition to the historic date of April 25, we will also celebrate this with a great initiative on November 25.”

“The announced intention, more than marking a date, constitutes an attempt to minimize the dimension and significance of the April Revolution, its achievements and values, at a time when the celebration of the 50th anniversary of April 25 began”pointed to the PCP’s elected officials.

This is considered as such in the text of the condemnation vote “What emerges most from this announcement is a discomfort with April, with the freedom, democracy and social progress that April has brought us.”using November 25 “and the falsifications that have become common from certain sectors to cover up those who do not forgive the fact that the April army and the Portuguese people put an end to fascism”.

In this sense, the PCP councilors proposed that the Lisbon City Council decide to oppose the intention of the President of the CML “in the celebration of November 25 and the consequent attempt to reduce the size of April 25, when 50 years of the revolution are marked”.

Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas, elected by the Novos Tempos coalition (PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança), announced on October 5 that the city will celebrate “with a great initiative on November 25”, next to April 25, 1974, “because all dates count”.

In his speech before several entities, including the Prime Minister, António Costa, and before the speech of the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Mayor of Lisbon emphasized that there are “data that become symbols”, that can be brought back ” to merely ceremonial, repetitive and routine rituals” or “dates remembered on paper but felt by people with apathy”.

“I would like to take this opportunity to announce that in addition to the historic date of April 25, we are also celebrating November 25 with a great initiative. Because every date counts”he added.
