Parliament is unanimous in its condemnation of Hamas and in defense of the humanitarian corridors

Last Friday, parliament unanimously approved the “absolute” condemnation of Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel and in defense of the creation of humanitarian corridors in the Gaza Strip, allowing access to water, food and energy.

Of the five points of the Foreign Affairs Committee’s condolence vote on the Israel-Hamas conflict, three were approved unanimously and on another – on the fifth – only Chega abstained.

Only the second point, referring to the right of the State of Israel to defend itself within the framework of international law, motivated the vote against the PCP and the Bloco de Esquerda, with Chega and PAN abstentions.

This vote by the Foreign Affairs Committee was the result of a merger of two texts initially presented by the Portugal-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group and Livre, which were finally agreed between the PS and PSD benches on Thursday.

The first point, which was unanimously adopted, states that the Assembly of the Republic “absolutely, immediately and unequivocally condemns the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel last Saturday, expresses its deepest regret for the victims of these attacks, especially the children, and shows solidarity with the families and friends of these victims and with the Israeli people.”

There was also unanimity in calling for “the release of all hostages and abducted people and an end to hostilities” so that “access to water, food or energy is not cut off,” and that humanitarian corridors be created so that full aid and support to the Palestinian people and innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip.”
