Paulo Portas warns that political manipulation of social media could destroy democracy

Former CDS/PP leader Paulo Portas said in Óbidos on Sunday that parties and institutions are being held hostage by political manipulation of social media and that this could destroy democracies.

“The parties, the institutions, are completely hostage to the political manipulation of digital networks, either to avoid it or to do it, and this is ending badly,” said Paulo Portas, insisting that this “could ultimately lead to the destruction of democracies,” as has been the case. knew each other until now.

The former minister, who took part in a panel of authors at the Folio – Óbidos International Literary Festival, which takes place under the theme ‘Risk’, alluded to the risks of artificial intelligence, saying that with it ‘ignorance acquires the status of power’. and that “the algorithm has absolutely diabolical logic.”

At the table he shared with Michel Eltchaninoff, a specialist in the history of Russian thought, to talk about the “future”, Paulo Portas also spoke about the past, to argue that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is not an admirer of Lenin’ and that Putin “believes that that special intervention in Ukraine is also the correction of a mistake made by Lenin, who defended a certain autonomy” of this country.

What is certain for both speakers is that the war between Russia and Ukraine “will last a very long time” and that the future in this area brings more questions than answers.

Paulo Portas admitted that he was an “absolute admirer of Russian literature and music” and expressed the hope that “this mania of mutual cancellation would not affect the richness of Russian culture, which is one of the most extraordinary” , despite the fact that: in the country’s history, “periods of free spirit are very rare.”

Therefore, he concluded, “Russians are much more accustomed to obeying than choosing” and have “tolerance toward central authoritarian power.”

This was the last of the 14 authors’ tables at the Folio – Óbidos International Literary Festival, which ends today, after 11 days of debating topics surrounding “Risco”.

In addition to the tables, the program included 108 conversations and meetings, 40 presentations and book launches, 40 shows and concerts, 21 exhibitions and 18 reading and poetry sessions in the village of the Leiria district where, since its opening on the 12th, a total of 603 authors and creators have gathered by.
