PCP criticizes former Soviet leader in text without a word of regret

The PCP on Wednesday released a highly critical note of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev blaming him for the restoration of capitalism in Russia, without a word of regret over his death on Tuesday.

“Gorbachev was one of the main ones responsible for the destruction of the Soviet Union and the restoration of capitalism in Russia, while what was needed was the improvement of socialism,” reads the short communiqué of just one paragraph and 123 words. .

For the Communists, Gorbachev’s intervention “paved the way for imperialism’s counter-offensive to recapture the positions lost in the 20th century and impose its hegemony on a global level, with dire consequences for workers’ rights that followed.” , the sovereignty of peoples, security in Europe and peace in the world”.

Proof of this idea, according to the PCP, is “the wars in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, among others”.

“The recognition and high praise bestowed on him by US, EU and NATO officials speaks for itself,” the PCP’s statement concluded.

Mikhail Gorbachev died Tuesday at the age of 91, Russian news agencies Tass, RIA Novosti and Interfax said, citing the Central Clinical Hospital.

Gorbachev’s office had said the former head of state was being treated in hospital, but no further details have been provided so far.

As the last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev fought a losing battle to save a fragile empire, but spawned extraordinary reforms that led to the end of the Cold War.

The former General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) brought about a series of changes between 1985 and 1991 that resulted in the collapse of the authoritarian Soviet state, the liberation of Eastern European nations from Russian rule and the end of decades of East-West nuclear confrontation.

Tass reported that the former head of state will be buried in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery, next to his wife.
