Housing: IL says lack of brake on rents is a decision “in the right direction”

The IL leader on Thursday defended that the government’s decision not to curb rental prices in 2024 “goes in the right direction” because it avoids a “new market breach”, highlighting the importance of supporting needy families.

On the sidelines of a visit to the Décor Hotel, which takes place in Lisbon, Rui Rocha was asked about the decision of the Council of Ministers last Thursday not to impose a rental brake in 2024, which will be updated by 6.94%.

“I would say it’s a decision that’s going in the right direction”started by responding to Rui Rocha.

The president of IL defended that “All these mechanisms for freezing rents and fixing rents can seem very interesting at a certain point”but has the consequence “there is less term supply on the housing market”.

“We also understand that in these times of transition or crisis, there is a need to support families who are most in need. Therefore, from this point of view, a measure in this sense is much better than measures involving freezing and recovery. incomes”he emphasized.

According to Rui Rocha, the repetition in 2024 of a brake on rent increases would be a “new breach of the market”, which “did not happen” this time.

“The problem is not in this specific measure, but in everything that has been the government’s intervention in housing matters, such as Mais Habitação, which has taken wrong measures in various aspects of the housing problem and which has harmed many people who need a solution “criticized.

The Liberal leader reiterated criticism of the PS government for taking away “confidence in the market” and “scaring those who proposed to invest and provide new housing solutions.”

“These wrong interventions, this wrong signal given by the government to the housing market, are damaging and worsening the lives of Portuguese people who need housing”he condemned.

This series of “wrong decisions”, whether “collected over decades” or made in Mais Habitação, does not, according to Rui Rocha, harm “those who invest, those who speculate.”

“This is about harming those looking for housing solutions, those looking for a home cannot find one”he said.

The government will not put a brake on rental prices in 2024, which will be updated by 6.94%, as the government has approved measures to strengthen support for tenants.

Hours after this decision was announced, the Minister of Finance assured during a hearing in Parliament that most Portuguese families will have a 2% increase in income, despite the criticism of the Left Bloc coordinator about the government’s departure. release the brakes on rent.
