The atmosphere was electric this Tuesday in the National Assembly. After a session of Questions to the Government marked by the tense exchange between the deputies of the RN and Bruno Le Maire, the president of the Lower House of Parliament sanctioned an elected official again.
Indeed, Yaël Braun-Pivet has imposed a call to order on the Renaissance deputy Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet. Before the vote on the unemployment insurance reform, the latter denounced the “50-year-old xenophobic DNA” of the RN.
The call to order is the first degree of sanction provided for in the regulations of the National Assembly. “You used the word ‘xenophobic’ on the podium with respect to a political party. I had just reminded you that you had to have a respectful attitude towards the other”, justified Yaël Braun-Pivet in the hemicycle.
“There we have a problem”
This sanction was criticized by various left-wing elected officials, but also by some majority voices.
“Here we have a problem. The National Front is historically a xenophobic party. It is factual, like that it was founded by a former Waffen SS or that it refuses to condemn the terrorist attacks of the ‘OAS. We cannot sanction the truth’, This is how the EELV deputy Julien Bayou wrote on social networks.
“But what is this forced march trivialization of the extreme right !!” PS boss Olivier Faure wonders for his part.
Criticism even from the side of the majority
In the hemicycle of the National Assembly, the president of the LFI group, Mathilde Panot, warned against “drift” that would be equivalent to sanctioning the use of words such as “xenophobic”. “It would be dangerous for the freedom of expression of our Assembly if we could not use political functions,” she said.
Criticisms have also been made on the side of the Renaissance. “If Jacques Chirac, head of state, could describe the FN in this way, then nothing and no one should prevent a deputy from putting words to the reality of the extreme right,” tweeted, for example, Ambroise Méjean, head of the extreme right. Young people with Macron, expressing their support for Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet.
With Franceinfo, the entourage of the president of the National Assembly defended Yaël Braun-Pivet, stressing that the sanction pronounced against Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet “has less force than [celles données] in the RN”.
Because a few minutes before, Yaël Braun-Pivet had imposed a call to order with entry in the minutes (the second level of sanction) to the RN deputy Alexandre Loubet, who described Bruno Le Maire as “cowardly”.
