Socialist leaders criticize Marcelo

Two members of the National Secretariat of the PS, Porfírio e Silva and Isabel Moreira, criticized the words addressed this Friday by the President of the Republic to the representative of Palestine in Portugal, because he considered that he should not bring Palestinians and Hamas together can confuse.

‘It seems that the President of the Republic told the representative of Palestine in Portugal that this time it was some of you who started it. Does the President of the Republic also confuse Hamas with the Palestinians?”asked Porfírio Silva, board member and vice-chairman of the PS bank, on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Also on social network X, the coordinator of Bloco de Esquerda, Mariana Mortágua, condemned the words of the head of state.

“In Gaza, the ethnic cleansing plan is being carried out as collective punishment under an argument – ‘someone on the Palestinian side started this’. Marcelo told the Palestinian ambassador: it is an embarrassment to Portugal,” the bloc leader wrote.

Porfírio Silva then wonders “whether it would not be reasonable to demand” from Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “at least” that he “not confuse Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.”

During a visit to the Diplomatic Bazaar, in Lisbon’s Congress Center, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa this morning told the head of the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Portugal that some Palestinians “should not have started this war with Israel” and advised them to be moderate. and peaceful.

When Nabil Abuznaid appealed to “the 56-year occupation,” the head of state responded: “I know, but they shouldn’t have started”.

Isabel Moreira, deputy, constitutionalist and also member of the National Secretariat of the PS, also criticized the words of the President of the Republic towards the representative of Palestine in Portugal.

“Shouldn’t they have started? Who? Confuses the Palestinians with Hamas and says they should be moderate now (the Palestinians, victims of Hamas of course),” he said in a message published on the social network X.

The PS leader added: “War crimes are committed every day by the occupying state (Israel) and the president of the republic says this? Not in my name.”

At the Diplomatic Bazaar, as he passed the Palestinian stall, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa greeted Nabil Abuznaid, who thanked the Portuguese head of state for the visit at this “very difficult time”.

The President of the Republic agreed that “it is a difficult period”, adding: “But you know, I think it will depend a lot on you. You must be an example of moderation”.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa argued that Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israeli territory does not contribute to the struggle for a sovereign state of Palestine. “You have to be moderate, otherwise you will lose your mind,” he emphasized.

The head of the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Portugal noted that “the response was brutal” from the Israeli forces and argued that “the occupation must end.”

“That is something else. The fact that there are not yet two states does not mean that you can attack innocent people in the way you did – some of you,” replied Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, noting that he “does not confuse the terrorist attack ”. with the desire for peace for the Palestinian people as a whole.”

Nabil Abuznaid called for an end to the war: “We must stop this war now, more people are dying.”

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa advised Palestinians to be “calm and cautious,” to be “prudent, intelligent and peaceful,” arguing that “otherwise things will be bad for everyone” and that “radicalism creates a climate of radicalism.”

“And this time the radicalism started on the part of some Palestinians, of course, a group,” he continued.

The head of the Palestinian diplomatic mission countered that “this does not excuse Israel’s brutal response” in the Gaza Strip and said “ten thousand people were killed.”

“Yes, I know you blame Israel for this. But this time it was someone from your side who started it. You shouldn’t have done that,” replied the President of the Republic.

Israel has no stall at this edition of the Diplomatic Bazaar that started today in Lisbon, and neither does the United States of America.
