IL wants justice to be served in the case of twins being treated in Santa Maria

The Liberal Initiative (IL) this Sunday considered it essential that the courts take action to clarify whether there was political interference when two Portuguese-Brazilian twin children received treatment costing four million euros at Santa Maria Hospital.

This point of view was conveyed by the President of IL, Rui Rocha, on his personal account on the social network that is expensive in the world – after being diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy.

According to TVI, the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon will open an audit to understand how two twins living in Brazil received treatment in Lisbon in 2019 that together cost four million euroswith the suspicion that this happened under the influence of the President of the Republic, who has already denied any interference.

“The President of the Republic has already given the guarantee that he did not interfere in the decision to carry out the four million treatment at the Santa Maria Hospital. Who therefore made the decision to implement this against the understanding of the responsible doctors? “, Rui Rocha asked in the message he published on the social network X.

According to the President of IL, “suspicions of political interference at the highest level prevent the proper use of SNS resources [Serviço Nacional de Saúde] constitute very serious allegations that must be fully investigated, including their possible criminal dimension, with the Public Prosecution Service taking all relevant steps.”

‘Your Prime Minister [António Costa] Were you aware of this case? And the then Minister of Health [Marta Temido] and the State Secretary [Francisco Ramos]what role did they play?” he asks.

Rui Rocha understands that in this case it is necessary to clarify where possible political pressure came from in favor of applying the treatment to the two Portuguese-Brazilian children, allegedly renouncing clinical treatment, and whether there are identical cases in which treatment was refused.

In the text he published on social media, the IL leader also wonders “how it is justified that documents from the trial have disappeared in the hospital” in Santa Maria.

The president of IL then believes that the SNS “has had more than six billion euros since 2015 and is still collapsing.”

“There are serious management problems that prevent the Portuguese from providing quality service even if they spend much more. There are currently approximately thirty hospital departments whose services and emergencies are closed or severely limited. In many parts of the country, access to care Urgent care in areas such as orthopedics or pediatrics is only available at a distance of several tens or even hundreds of kilometers. It is essential to understand why in detail,” he adds.
