European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen believes that now is the time for “national authorities to investigate” the case of alleged corruption, which has caused a political crisis in Portugal.
Von der Leyen was responding to a question about whether she is aware of the political crisis in Portugal and the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa, and whether funds for the recovery and resilience plan could be affected.
The President of the European Commission responded curtly and said that she is aware of the case based on information circulating in the press.
“We are following the news from Portugal and it is now up to the national authorities to investigate this,” replied the President of the European Commission, leaving unclear, from Brussels’ point of view, the possible consequences of the political crisis, within the scope of implementation of the PRR.
