Russia, arms deliveries, fuel… What to remember from Emmanuel Macron’s interview

guest of the show The event On France 2, Emmanuel Macron returned to address various issues, including the war in Ukraine, but also fuel shortages.

New arms deliveries to Ukraine, nuclear doctrine… This Wednesday on France 2, Emmanuel Macron was especially invited to speak about the war in Ukraine. During this interview, the president recalled that Ukraine and Russia should return to the negotiating table, but also that he “obviously” intended to continue the dialogue with Vladimir Putin.

But with the burning issue of fuel shortages, the Elysée tenant finds it difficult to evade the subject. Therefore, he decided to raise the issue by targeting the CGT directly.

• France will deliver anti-aircraft defense systems to Ukraine

As demands became increasingly pressing from Ukraine, the target of a multitude of Russian strikes since Monday, Emmanuel Macron announced tonight the forthcoming delivery of anti-aircraft defense systems to Ukraine.

“We are going to deliver radars, systems and missiles (anti-aircraft, editor’s note) to protect (Ukrainians) from attacks, in particular to protect them from drone attacks,” he explained.

The Head of State added that France had already supplied 18 Caesar guns, which were particularly appreciated by Kyiv.

• A solemn call for the return of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations

He recalled this Wednesday night that the only result that Emmanuel Macron foresees regarding the war in Ukraine is the return to the negotiating table in Kyiv and Moscow.

At some point, I hope as soon as possible, we will have to come back to the table. (…) I think that at some point it will be in the interest of Ukraine and Russia to come back to the table and negotiate,” the head of state said.

In passing, he made sure to specify that he had not closed the course of negotiations with Vladimir Putin. “Whenever necessary, I will talk to Vladimir Putin.”

• Nuclear weapons, “the less we talk about it, the more credible we are”

While fears about a possible Russian use of nuclear weapons resurfaced after the alarmist statements by Joe Biden at the end of September, Emmanuel Macron wanted to temper this Wednesday on France 2.

“There is a simple rule: we have a doctrine, it is clear: deterrence (nuclear, editor’s note) works but, the less we talk about it, the less we agitate the threat, the more credible we are,” declared the headline. of the ‘State.

For Emmanuel Macron, France’s nuclear doctrine “is based on the fundamental interests of the nation, they are very clearly defined.”

• On the fuel front, a return to normal “within the next week”

Difficult for the Head of State, who had not spoken at length for more than three months, to ignore the issue of fuel shortages that are slowly spreading to France.

During this interview, Emmanuel Macron promised that the situation “would return to normal” in the distribution of fuel “in the course of the next week”. A statement questioned by several trade unionists, this Wednesday night on BFMTV.

The Head of State once again called on the management of TotalEnergies and the CGT to be “responsible”.

• “That the CGT allows the country to function”

Emmanuel Macron did not hesitate to point directly at the unions, directly involved in a social conflict with Total and Exxon, at the origin of the fuel shortage that is slowly gaining ground in France.

The Head of State launched: “that the CGT allows the functioning of the country”.

“I think there are sectors and certain players who consider that we can go ‘hard’ right away, to speak colloquially,” he lamented. Also believing that it was “too easy” to “always pass the buck” to the government.
