National Federation of Physicians says exit is not surprising

The president of the National Federation of Physicians (FNAM), Noel Carrilho, on Tuesday found Marta Temido’s resignation “not surprising”, but stressed that now is the time to move forward and find solutions to the sector’s problems.

“I’d say it’s not surprising [a demissão]. The National Health Service (SNS) has deteriorated to the point that it has already been blatantly failing to meet its targets. But more than adapting the various actions of a minister, we want to understand whether this gesture will be reflected in a change of policy with agility and speed to solve the problems,” Noel Carrilho emphasized to Lusa.

The chairman of FNAM recalled that all the time now lost will always be an irreparable loss for patients.

“It is not a type of ministry that regrets delays. It is important that progress is made, that it is not exercised, that this change of face in the ministry does not serve to once again question the measures that are needed “Unfortunately, there are several things that are negatively exposed and all exposed in a timely manner, for example the lack of dialogue, which has killed the relationship with the doctors,” he said.

Noel Carrilho stressed that FNAM does not want to focus on the past, although it is important to make this assessment so as not to repeat mistakes in the future.

“We want to focus on future possibilities and we are, as we always have been, open to negotiations, dialogue and on the side of solutions,” he said.

Regarding the new minister, Noel Carrilho said he hopes he will be “someone with a spirit of dialogue open to the ideas of the people on the ground” and that “he will bring political weight and initiative with him”.

Health Minister Marta Temido resigned today because she understood she “no longer had the conditions” to hold the position, a resignation accepted by Prime Minister António Costa.

“The health minister, Marta Temido, has today tendered her resignation to the prime minister because she understands she can no longer remain in office,” the ministry said in a note this morning.

Minutes later, a statement from the prime minister’s office said that António Costa “has received the health minister’s resignation” and that he has accepted it.

António Costa thanked “all the work developed” by Marta Temido, “especially in the exceptional period of fighting the covid-19 pandemic”.

Marta Temido began her duties as Minister of Health in October 2018, succeeding Adalberto Campos Fernandes.

During her tenures, Marta Temido has been central to managing the pandemic, which started in 2020 but also went through several controversies. Recently, the closure of emergency obstetric services at several hospitals due to a lack of doctors to fill the trays has put a strain on custody.
