Carlos Moedas says Lisbon mayor “doesn’t govern together with Chega”

Mayor Carlos Moedas said on Tuesday that he will support “with all his strength” the leader of the PSD, Luís Montenegro, in the parliamentary elections in March, taking the opportunity to emphasize that “the president of the Lisbon City Council reigns jointly with Chega”.

Speaking to journalists, on the sidelines of the Web Summit technology summit, which took place in Lisbon, the mayor emphasized: “I do not govern with Chega in Lisbon, I do not govern with Chega in Lisbon.”

However, Carlos Moedas (PSD, which governs Lisbon without an absolute majority) believed that anyone who votes for the party led by André Ventura should be “respected”.

“The people who voted for Chega today are angry (…) and this uprising is a real uprising”, as a result of “they can no longer stand a country where politicians are not committed to the public good and dedicate themselves to party politics”, analyzed, calling for an end to the “political friction”, which today is polarized into “extremes on the left and right, which create hatred”.

When asked whether he will fulfill his mandate until the end regardless of the outcome of the next parliamentary elections, Carlos Moedas replied: “Without any doubt. I am the Mayor of Lisbon. I have a great privilege to be President of the Lisbon Chamber .”

Portugal will hold early parliamentary elections on March 10, 2024, already announced by the President of the Republic, following the resignation of the Prime Minister.

António Costa is the target of an investigation by the Public Prosecution Service at the Supreme Court, after suspicions in a trial investigating influence peddling in the operations of a data center in Sines invoked his name as having intervened to unblock proceedings.

Carlos Moedas tried to avoid talking about “party politics”, emphasizing that, as “president of all Lisbon residents”, he must be “above all political parties”, but he did not fail to consider the current situation “very serious” . country.

“The things that are happening are serious and that is why the country is going to elections. None of us expected elections at this time,” he noted.

Moedas appeals for political, economic and social stability and says that as mayor he responded to the crisis by “working every day”.

The mayor told the “many business people” who asked him at the Web Summit about the impact of the current situation that “there are no consequences in Lisbon” of the political crisis.

“Lisbon is stable, we govern the city, we work exactly in such a way that people have confidence,” he assured them.
