About 60 thousand PS members can vote in the election of the new leader on the 15th and 16th

About 60,000 socialist activists can vote in the direct internal elections on the 15th and 16th to elect the new PS General Secretary, and 1,400 delegates to the January congress.

These details were released today in a statement by the PS Congress Organizing Committee (COC), a structure chaired by Socialist leader and deputy Pedro do Carmo.

The elections to succeed António Costa as PS secretary general will be contested between current Interior Minister José Luís Carneiro, former minister and deputy Pedro Nuno Santos and Socialist leader Daniel Adrião.

According to the COC Of the 80,000 members registered in the PS, about 60,000 have paid their dues until last Friday and can therefore vote on the 15th and 16th to elect the new general secretary and the 1,400 delegates for the congress, which will take place in the Lisbon International Fair (FIL) between January 5 and 7.

In addition to the 1,400 delegates elected by the “bases”, there will be another 1,100 delegates at the congress who are entitled to membership (but without voting rights) because they belong to national bodies of party structures, or because they hold positions of political appointment by the PS.

In terms of distribution of the number of socialist activists across the national territory, the Federation of Porto remains the largest in the country according to the COC, but Braga overtook the FAUL Federation of the Lisbon Urban Area in second place.

As usual in the PS, direct elections to choose the new leader and delegates to the congress will take place in two days.

On Friday, December 15, FAUL activists and those of the federations of Aveiro, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Guarda, Leiria, Portalegre, Oeste, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo and Vila Real will vote.

On Saturday, December 16, there will be elections in the federations of Algarve, Baixo Alentejo, Braga, Coimbra, Porto, Santarém, Viseu, Azores and Madeira. Voting ends Saturday at 10 p.m.

According to the COC, the period for delivering the competing lists to the more than 1,400 deputies who will be elected to the XXIV National Congress of the PS will also take place between Thursday and December 11.
