PCP questions Carneiro about ‘pay inequality between police officers’

This Thursday, the PCP questioned the Minister of the Interior about the “pay inequality between police officers”, asking why the pay supplements for the PSP and GNR are not also revised, similar to what happened with the PJ.

In a question to José Luís Carneiro through the General Assembly of the Republic, PCP deputy Alma Rivera states that, since the new mission supplement for the Judicial Police (PJ) was approved by the Council of Ministers on November 29, “Several news has emerged indicating pay increases for PJ careers that could amount to around 700 euros per month through the mission supplement.”

“For the PCP, a salary increase is indispensable. What cannot happen is the maintenance of police forces with unimaginable salary conditions, as happens in the National Republican Guard (GNR) or the Public Security Police (PSP),” the PCP argues.

That’s what the party says the current situation “has sparked outrage among PSP and GNR professionals, who have long been demanding a revision of the values of their respective reward supplements, especially the risk supplement, which is significantly lower than the stated value”.

“The PCP Parliamentary Group emphasizes that it has urged the need to increase the remuneration of professionals in the security forces and services,” it refers.

In this context, the party asks José Luís Carneiro “why there is such a huge disparity between the PSP and GNR compared to the PJ in terms of supplements that aim to compensate for exposure to factors of the same nature”.

“Why are the remuneration supplements for PSP and GNR professionals not also revised?” they also wonder.

On Wednesday, the PSP unions and GNR associations decided to hold several demonstrations starting next Thursday in Porto, where the Council of Ministers meeting took place, to demand an identical allowance for PJ members.

The unions and associations of these security forces criticize what they see as the unequal treatment and difference in income compared to the PJ.

At issue is the fact that last week the government approved the payment of a mission allowance for PJ careers, which in some cases could mean an increase of almost 700 euros per month.
