The President of the Republic tonight formalized his resignation from the government, according to a note published on the official website of the presidency.
“According to and as a result of the resignation of the Prime Minister, the President of the Republic has today, in accordance with the Constitution, proclaimed the resignation of the government, effective tomorrow, December 8,” the note said.
This is the formalization of the fall of the executive power, a month after Prime Minister António Costa offered his resignation to the president on November 7, declaring that he had accepted it “immediately”. Marcelo later announced he would dissolve parliament and schedule early parliamentary elections for March 10.
“After his resignation and until the inauguration of his successor, the government will, in accordance with constitutional conditions, ensure the practice of “acts strictly necessary to ensure public affairs,” the presidential note also said.
