Carneiro says there can be “no” concessionaires with more power than the state

PS leadership candidate José Luís Carneiro declared on Saturday in Barcelos, Braga district, that “there cannot be any concessionary entities that have greater power than the state itself”, referring to the location of Lisbon’s new airport.

“There cannot be any concessionary entities that have greater power than the state itself. The State must have a power that takes precedence over those who are the concessionaires, in the exercise of a right, but also of duties, in respect of the public interest.”he said.

The Independent Technical Commission (CTI) has identified Alcochete as the most beneficial solution for the new airport, between the two feasible solutions for an intercontinental ‘hub’ (airport functioning as a flight distribution platform).

However, the airport manager of the multinational Vinci expressed its willingness to make all the necessary investments in a new airport in Montijo, but not in Alcochete.

As for the location, José Luís Carneiro said that “it is necessary to respect the agreement reached with the PSD”, for a decision that “must earn a broad national consensus”.

“[Essa decisão] It will hold different governments accountable in the future because it is a work that will take time and that is why I said that we must avoid haste. And that’s what I was trying to do: avoid rushing into an issue that is so relevant to the country,” he added.
