IL wants to hear the son of the President of the Republic in parliament

The president of the Liberal Initiative announced on Sunday that he will request a parliamentary hearing for the son of the President of the Republic Nuno Rebelo de Sousa on the twins’ case and hopes that the PS will not block these clarifications again.

Speaking to Lusa, Rui Rocha recalled that the PS this week blocked requests for a hearing from former governors Marta Temido and Lacerda Sales, “in a case that has been going on for weeks and in which there are conflicting versions.”

“Taking into account what remains to be clarified and this position of the PS which prevents people who have direct knowledge of the facts from being able to clarify the Portuguese, IL is faced with the need to file a request for Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Sousone,” he stated.

Rui Rocha justified that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s son was cited as “having had some form of intervention in this case” and that there is even news that he had met with then Secretary of State for Health Lacerda Sales.

“Given the blockade of the PS, it is necessary to summon Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Sousa to parliament so that he can say whether there is any involvement on his part and contribute to clarifying the Portuguese on this issue,” said he.

Asked whether he does not foresee any new “cause” for this request for a hearing, which will only be of an ordinary and non-mandatory nature, Rui Rocha said he hopes this will not happen.

“If there were to be another attempt to stop this by the PS, we would have to interpret that there is a difficult to understand interest here to block the clarification of the Portuguese”he claimed.

According to the Rules of Order of the Assembly of the Republic, “parliamentary committees may request participation in their work by any citizen”, although they may do so only in a mandatory (mandatory) manner with regard to members of the government, managers, employees and contractors of the indirect administration of the state and state-owned enterprises and members of bodies of independent administrative entities.

The case concerns two twin children living in Brazil who have since acquired Portuguese nationality and came to Portugal in 2019 to receive the drug Zolgensma against spinal muscular atrophy, for a total amount of four million euros. TVI announced in November that denounced the alleged interference of the President of the Republic.

On Monday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that his son had contacted him about the situation of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who later received the drug at Santa Maria Hospital and argued that the treatment he gave to this case was neutral and just like so many others.
