PS requests urgent transmission of Santa Maria’s internal audit report to parliament

This Wednesday, the PS requested the urgent transmission to Parliament of the final report of the internal audit of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte (CHULN) on the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins treated at Santa Maria Hospital.

The chairman of the board of directors of CHULN, Ana Paula Martins, announced this Wednesday that she has already received the final internal audit report on the case and has sent it to the General Health Inspectorate (IGAS) and the guardianship.

“We request that this report be made available as a matter of urgency to the PS faction, the Health Committee and all parties,” Socialist deputy Luís Soares said in an interview with Lusa.

According to the coordinator of the PS bank at the Health Commission, this report will clarify all the hospital’s administrative procedures and prove that the twins’ case was “treated in exactly the same way as ten other children in Santa Maria”.

Luís Soares welcomed what he classified as Ana Paula Martins’ “important audition”.

“We are satisfied with the way in which you managed to explain in a factual manner a certain suspicion that existed about the hospital itself, about the doctors, about the intervention of the government itself, emphasizing that all cases were treated in exactly the same way were treated. with respect for the principles determined by the hospital”he claimed.

When asked when he expects parliament to have access to this report, Luís Soares said he sees no reason “why it should not be sent to parliament immediately.”

Luís Soares believed that access to the report will allow there to be “absolutely no doubt” about how the twins’ trial took place and to know whether there was a “wrong procedure or not” that will occur in the future needs to be corrected.

When asked whether the PS will be able to take further steps in this case, the deputy recalled that the party has called not only Ana Paula Martins, but also the Minister of Health, and will now wait for the ongoing investigations at IGAS and the Public Ministry.

Luís Soares emphasized that parliament is “an organ of political control” and believed that the condemnation by some parties was “an untenable deception”.

The chairman of CHULN, at the request of the PS, was heard in the Parliamentary Health Committee on the “alleged favoritism of two twin babies, suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy, in access to treatment with the drug Zolgensma”.

The case of the two twins living in Brazil who have now acquired Portuguese nationality and came to Portugal in 2020 to receive the drug Zolgensma for spinal muscular atrophy, for a total amount of four million euros, was published by TVI in November.
