Rui Rocha: “We are in the first line of battle against Pedro Nuno Santos”

The president of the Liberal Initiative (IL) guaranteed this Saturday in Leiria that he will be in the “first line of battle against Pedro Nuno Santos”, who is participating today in the elections for general secretary of the Socialist Party.

Rui Rocha, president of IL, declared on Saturday in an intervention at the meeting of the National Council that he “will oppose the model of society in which Pedro Nuno Santos was complicit and that he now wants to continue to reproduce, as if by chance he becomes ruler of this country “.

“We will be in the first line of battle against Pedro Nuno Santos,” he promised.

In addition to the deputy and former Minister of Infrastructure Pedro Nuno Santos, the holder of the Internal Administration portfolio, José Luís Carneiro, and the leader of the minority line Daniel, are candidates for Secretary General of the PS.

Say that ‘All Portugal is the title of the strategy motion that Pedro Nuno Santos presented to the Socialist Party”, Rui Rocha admitted that “as a diagnosis it is a nice title, because it clearly shows in what state the PS left the country”.

“If the candidate for leader of the PS himself has to say that a whole Portugal is needed, it means that Portugal is broken,” he emphasized.

The IL leader believed that there is a “clear sign of defeat for Pedro Nuno Santos’ proposal”, if he were to become Prime Minister, “in terms of taxes”. “Pedro Nuno Santos talks vaguely about the reduction of the IRS, he says that we should look at some tax reduction, for VAT and indirect taxes. He says that in Portugal few people pay IRS and that few will continue to pay ” , advanced.

Rui Rocha opined that this statement “is a huge defeat because it means that Pedro Nuno Santos does not believe that it is possible to increase revenues for the Portuguese. We will remain a mediocre country from an economic and growth point of view,” he criticized, defending that IL wants “a country where people progress through their work.”

Rui Rocha pointed out that “taxes and the IRS are suffocating people,” and said the same thing is happening to corporations. “We want and need companies that want to grow. The signal that the PS has given these years with Pedro Nuno Santos and will continue to give is that it is better for companies not to grow, because if they grow, they pay more. and are subject to more bureaucracy,” he said.

The IL leader also criticized the high taxes on the middle class, “who earn very little and are heavily taxed”, also mentioning that the country is broken for young people who “emigrate not by choice, but as something they are forced to do”.

Since the last parliamentary elections, Rui Rocha understands that “nothing has improved, everything has become worse,” and that is why, he said, he does not accept this country.

According to the President of IL, “Portugal is in broken health” given the lack of solutions for access to healthcare.

“We know all the shocking cases where the PS abandoned healthcare in Portugal. “In December, we systematically have 30, 35, 40 emergency services across the country that are not working or that are seriously compromised,” he noted.

Rui Rocha also pointed out that Portugal is divided in terms of education. “The PISA results show that this generation has been abandoned by the PS because it insisted on keeping schools closed for too long during the pandemic” and “did not provide adequate recovery plans for this generation,” he added.

Highlighting some of the party’s principles, the IL leader emphasized that the “health proposal is the best thing that can be done” because people can “get the health care they prefer.”

“They can say: I want to be in the public sector, but if there is an open door next door in the private sector or in the social sector, that person can choose that offer. It is better for that person to decide which door he wants. want to knock on than that we have nothing to knock on.” , and that is what we have today,” he lamented.

“Portugal is growing and moving forward” is also one of the objectives of IL, which also defended a lower tax burden for independent and liberal workers and property owners.
