Case of the twins. PS Marcelo’s son’s audition fails

The Socialist Party (PS) on Wednesday failed to hold the parliamentary hearing of the son of the President of the Republic, in the context of the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins, according to CNN.

The request was filed by the Liberal Initiative (IL), which wanted to hear from Nuno Rebelo de Sousa about his alleged involvement in the Portuguese-Brazilian twins’ access to treatment at the Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon.

IL President Rui Rocha defended that it was “necessary to appoint Dr. Nuno Rebelo de Sousa to parliament” to clarify whether there was “any involvement on his part” in the Luso-Brazilian twins’ access to treatment.

The hearings of Marta Temido and Lacerda Sales, Minister of Health and her State Secretary at the time of the events, were also rejected by the PS. The same happened with the hearing of the twins’ parents, whose request was filed by Chega.

The case concerns two twin children living in Brazil who have since acquired Portuguese nationality and came to Portugal in 2019 to receive the drug Zolgensma against spinal muscular atrophy, for a total amount of four million euros. TVI announced in November that denounced the alleged interference of the President of the Republic.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that his son had contacted him about the situation of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who later received the drug at Santa Maria Hospital and argued that the treatment he gave to this case was neutral and the same as so many others.

The case is being investigated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PGR), by the General Inspectorate of Health Activities (IGAS) and was the subject of an internal audit at Santa Maria Hospital.
