The year now coming to an end has been “particularly difficult for the Portuguese” but “globally positive”. The analysis comes from Pedro Nuno Santos, secretary general of the PS, in his New Year’s message.
However, in a video sent to newsrooms and published on the party’s social networks, it is acknowledged that when we look to 2024 and think about the future of the individual and the family “there is a diffuse idea of uncertainty”, which “of course is” . “The political crisis that broke out last November ended a cycle of government stability and left the country in a situation where the Portuguese will be called upon to decide their future in the March 10 elections. 2024 is therefore a year of choices about the path that Portugal should follow in the future,” says Pedro Nuno Santos.
And his priorities are “the usual ones of the Socialist Party”, and “trying to respond to the honest aspirations, concerns and ambitions of the vast majority of Portuguese”.
In other words: “The aspiration of families to see their incomes improve, both the salaries of those who work and the pensions of those who have worked all their lives. The concern to guarantee free healthcare and quality public school regardless of income, as well as access to decent housing that families can afford. The ambition to transform our economy, to make it more qualified and advanced and to turn it into a whole economy where everyone can develop themselves through work.”
All this guarantees “correct and sustainable public accounts that guarantee the security of the country in the future”. “Socialist governments have made very important progress in the past eight years. What we want in this new year is to give new impetus to the work of António Costa and open a new cycle of reforms and progress in Portugal.”, says Pedro Nuno Santos.
According to the PS Secretary General, only the party “is in a position to guarantee the Portuguese a project of governance that guarantees stability, defends democratic institutions, develops and reforms the social state and accelerates the transformation of our economy.”
The wish is that “2024 can be the year” in which, like the Socialist Party, “hope and confidence in the future” are strengthened. “The year in which we dare with conviction, but also with responsibility, with ambition, but also with stability, for a better life throughout Portugal,” he concludes, referring to his campaign motto for direct elections.
