Lola’s death continues to resonate in the seats of Parliament. After the National Assembly on Tuesday, Elisabeth Borne was arrested in the Senate for the murder of the 12-year-old girl found in a trunk in Paris on Friday night. Bruno Retailleau, leader of the LR senators, asked her in particular if she recognized “a responsibility of the State” in this drama.
For several days, the right and the extreme right have been highlighting the origin of the main suspect in this case, born in Algeria and who was forced to leave French territory.
“She was savagely attacked by an Algerian citizen who should not have been on French soil,” Bruno Retailleau launched in the hemicycle.
“Do not use the death of a child for political purposes”
“I think that in politics, whatever the circumstances, we should always opt for dignity,” the prime minister replied.
“I believe that dignity commands us not to exploit the incalculable pain of a family and not to use the death of a child for political purposes,” he continued.
Bruno Retailleau made harsh statements against the government, considering that “voices have been raised since Sunday to muzzle the debate” while “the very essence of democracy is questioning and debate.”
“Do you know what Lola’s parents asked for?”
“Mr. Retailleau, I deeply believe in judicial independence: that the investigators work and the family weep”, launched Élisabeth Borne while the president of the LR group in the Senate had stated in particular that “immigration disorder can kill”.
“If this Algerian had not been in the territory, Lola would still be alive,” Bruno Retailleau sang, also citing another murder that would have been perpetrated in France by another person in an irregular situation.
The Prime Minister thus asked him again to respect the pain of the family. “Do you know what Lola’s parents asked for? Respect, peace for Lola’s memory and let her cry with dignity. We owe it to them,” he concluded.
