Julien Bayou accused of psychological violence: the deputy retired but not suspended from his group in the Assembly

Harassed by a complaint from his ex-partner for “moral harassment” and “abuse of weakness”, the environmentalist deputy remains a member of his group in the National Assembly, but will continue his withdrawal.

The environmentalist deputy Julien Bayou, retired after a complaint from his former partner who accused him of “psychological violence”, was not suspended by his group in the Assembly, parliamentary sources confirmed on Wednesday, March 27, the day after an internal vote.

According to the internal regulations, a qualified majority of 60% of the group’s members was necessary to officially suspend the Paris deputy. It was not reached during the vote, the deputies said, confirming information from BFMTV and the site. The days.

“It remains in the background, but not suspended,” we specify within the group of 22 elected officials.

Rousseau “really regrets” this decision

“We have taken a lot of time to debate. It is a difficult issue (…) In the end, taking into account the elements we have, withdrawal seemed the most appropriate,” reacted the president of the group, Cyrielle Chatelain.

This withdrawal means that Julien Bayou cannot speak on behalf of his group either in the House or in the media.

Deputy Sandrine Rousseau regretted the lack of suspension. “I really regret this decision. I would have liked the group to affirm a feminist political line,” she declared.

The Young Ecologists, the party’s youth movement, also criticized the result of the vote “which does not live up to our commitments in the fight against sexist and sexual violence.” Several activists took the same direction on social media.

“I understand these reactions,” said Cyrielle Chatelain. “On these issues, we try to do the best we can. We are moving on a path to the top.”

“Feminist trial of the century”

Julien Bayou announced on March 7 that he was withdrawing from his group and his party, following a complaint filed by his ex-partner for moral harassment and abuse of weakness.

Anaïs Leleux, who accuses the environmentalist of “psychological violence”, stated that she wanted to make this matter “the feminist trial of the century.”

In September 2022, Julien Bayou, then head of the environmental party and co-president of the group in the Assembly, had already retired and had to leave his duties following the first revelations by his former partner in an email sent two months earlier. in the internal sexual and gender violence unit of the EELV.

The cell took charge of its own investigation and, in September, deputy Sandrine Rousseau sparked the situation by publicly broadcasting the accusations, denouncing “behaviors that can undermine the moral health of women.”

But six months later, the environmental group registered the end of the parliamentarian’s retirement, after the closure of the internal investigation, for not being able to listen to the complainant. Julien Bayou was then considered “acquitted” and “innocent.”

Until that moment, no complaint had been filed nor any judicial investigation had been opened.
