“The 4-day week is me”: Gabriel Attal defends his “ideas” against Macron

During his appearance on the TF1 program at 8pm on Wednesday, the Prime Minister not only spoke about public finances, but also about his autonomy from Emmanuel Macron.

An opportunity to leave your mark. While Emmanuel Macron is in Brazil, Gabriel Attal does not hesitate to be the center of attention and lead the response to the slide in the public deficit (5.5% of GDP in 2023), announced on Tuesday.

Invited the next day at 8 pm on TF1, the Prime Minister announced a new reform of unemployment insurance, but also presented his “ideas”, who was often presented by the opposition as a simple collaborator at the time of his appointment.

“With the Head of State we apply the program according to which we were elected by the French,” he first stressed. Gabriel Attal. Before mentioning “the four-day week,” whose experimentation he promotes, but which “was not in the program.” “Yes, it’s me,” he commented, and then added:

“And furthermore, even before the re-election in 2022, in the previous term as minister I had already carried out these ideas. Then I put them into practice when I was in Bercy.”

Comparison with Laurent Fabius

“Evidently each one contributes sensitivity and ideas,” said the head of Government. As for the criticism of his young age (35 now, 34 when he arrived in Matignon) and a possible lack of autonomy, “that makes me smile,” he said.

And Gabriel Attal mentions Laurent Fabius, whom he has “seen” since taking office. Appointed prime minister by François Mitterrand at the age of 37 in 1984, the current president of the Constitutional Council until now held the record of being the youngest head of government in the Fifth Republic.

“At the time […] “There were exactly the same words, the same criticisms about a collaborationist,” observed Gabriel Attal. Questioned by Alain Duhamel about his autonomy, the socialist responded with a statement that remained for posterity: “He is him and I am me.”
