Europeans: Glucksmann justifies his presence at a Sarkozy meeting in 2007

The head of the PS list in the European elections clarified that he had come at that time to write a book and not to support the man who was going to become President of the Republic.

The European campaign took on an air of déjà vu this Friday, March 29, on France Info when Raphaël Glucksmann, head of the PS and Place Publique list, justified his presence at a meeting with Nicolas Sarkozy during the 2007 presidential elections. Possible support for the The former president of the Republic was already an element used by his left-wing adversaries, during the previous European campaign, in 2019.

Five years later, Raphaël Glucksmann defended himself again, stating on public radio that he had not come “to support Sarkozy”, but “to write a book about May 68, which was the latter’s objective.” The work in question is co-written with his father, André Glucksmann, a philosopher who died in 2015 and who affirmed his support for the former head of state in 2007. A “mistake” in “the context of the time”, he had judged his son . before Liberation.

“People evolve”

Before the microphone of France Info, he denies having been “engaged in politics” at that time, but recognizes “liberal philosophical convictions.” From? “I wrote two books about this transition from philosophical liberalism to awareness of the aporia of neoliberalism,” explains Raphaël Glucksmann. “You know, people evolve,” he says, adding:

“I think we can perfectly explain how we were able to believe in the 2000s in this world that was opening up, in this globalization (…) and to what extent this myth (…) led to deindustrialization, to the weakening of social contracts in our nations and, ultimately, an ecological catastrophe. But did you vote for Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007? “But not!” the person responds twice.

Third man in the polls

In 2024, history could lead to a completely different scenario than in 2019. That year, already representing the PS, his list had obtained 6.19% of the votes, far behind the first places and the lists of his left-wing competitors, led by the rebel Manon Aubry (6.31%) and the environmentalist Yannick Jadot (13.48%).

This year, Raphaël Glucksmann and his running mates obtain between 11 and 13% of voting intentions according to the polls, which places them in third position behind the majority and the National Rally. Enough to have hope of altering the balance of power on the left, largely dominated by La Francia insubordinate since the last presidential election.
