Costa emphasizes the irreplaceable role of the United Nations and congratulates the Portuguese army

The Prime Minister today stressed the irreplaceable role of the United Nations, given that it remains one of the greatest symbols of the collective common conscience in the defense of peace and human rights, and congratulated the military’s role in Portugal.

These views were conveyed by the leader of the Portuguese executive in several posts that he published on his account on the social network Twitter, when today marks the United Nations Day and also the conquest of Lisbon by King D. Afonso Henriques, patron of the army.

“Today is United Nations Day. The UN (United Nations) remains one of the greatest symbols of our common conscience as humanity,” wrote António Costa.

In his message, the prime minister defended that “the work of the United Nations in defense of peace, human rights and a more inclusive and sustainable world is indisputable”.

“And his role in overcoming global challenges is irreplaceable,” he added.

On the social network Twitter, António Costa also pointed out that the army is commemorating the conquest of Lisbon in 1147 by its patron D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal.

“I congratulate all the women and men, officers, sergeants, soldiers and civil servants, who serve the country there selflessly. In peace-support operations or when responding to emergencies in support of the civil protection system, the Portuguese know that they can always count on their army.” the Prime Minister insisted.
