The no-confidence motion put forward by the Nupes was of course unsuccessful, receiving only 239 votes instead of the required minimum of 289 to overthrow the government. But to everyone’s surprise, the National Grouping parliamentary group finally opted to vote for the leftist attempt during its examination in the Chamber on Monday. Contrary to what their representatives had said last Friday.
A circumstantial alliance strongly criticized by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. Speaking on the platform of the Palais-Bourbon before the vote, the latter scoffed:
“I hear Madame Le Pen join the Nupes motion of censure. Does this mean that an alliance can do without a common value, a shared conviction and converging ambitions? Madame Le Pen, Madame Panot, Madame Châtelain (environmental deputy elected in Isère and president of the EELV group, editor’s note), Monsieur Bardella, Monsieur Vallaud (elected socialist deputy in the Landes and president of the PS group, editor’s note), and Mr. Chassaigne (elected communist deputy in Puy-de- Dôme, president of the Democratic and Republican Left group, editor’s note) that you propose to the French?
Censorship cannot “be a posture”
“Censorship cannot be a position, you have to assume the consequences, say where an alternative would be found and what it would offer the French,” the head of government also observed.
“Voting censure is a difficult decision,” he had previously said. “To vote for censure is to presume to let the French energy bill skyrocket in a period of crisis; it is to reject the increase of our teachers; it is to refuse to reinforce the means of our armies, of our internal security forces, of our justice; it is exposing our most fragile fellow citizens; it is weakening the purchasing power of the middle classes.”
If you doubted it, Elisabeth Borne keeps her confirmation there anyway: her relative majority is very uncomfortable. However, it was enough to reject the second motion examined on Monday, presented by the former RN, and actually validate the first part of the state budget.
