“We are the ones who stand up to Macron”: why the RN voted for the Nupes motion of censure

To everyone’s surprise, Marine Le Pen’s group cast their votes on Nupes’ motion of no confidence. RN deputies saw it as an opportunity to present themselves as “the real opposition” to the government while sending a message to Elisabeth Borne.

A gesture that surprised the entire hemicycle. Marine Le Pen made her deputies vote this Tuesday in favor of Nupes’s motion of censure, very far from her position a few days earlier. In the RN caucuses we salute this setback considered as a trap set for the left and the Republicans.

“We can see that only we are the ones who really stand up to Emmanuel Macron”, analyzes Philippe Olivier, special adviser to Marine Le Pen, with BFMTV.com.

Nupes motion of censure considered “acceptable”

If the vote of his group and that of the Nupes deputies failed to overthrow the government -with 249 votes, far from the 289 necessary-, this position shook the entire National Assembly.

To justify herself, the patron saint of deputies pointed to “the national interest” and “the acceptable terms” of Nupes’ motion of censure.

The elected Pas-de-Calais, however, made different comments on BFMTV last week, explaining “that a priori” her party would not vote for her. But everything changed this weekend when the deputies revised the text presented by the Nupes.

“We took the time to immerse ourselves in it and there we realized that the left cared less about the substance than the form. It does not go into the field of immigration or the police,” explains RN MP Thomas Ménagé with BFMTV .com.

A reflection of several days.

Since the beginning of the parliamentary mandate, Marine Le Pen’s party has insisted on its option to vote for “all the provisions that go in the right direction for the French”.

Suffice it to say that not voting for this left-wing text, denouncing “the increase in inequalities” and “the impasse in the face of climate change”, could have been interpreted as a change of course.

What pushes several members of the party to reflect. As of Friday, MP Sébastien Chenu begs Marine Le Pen to suggest that he review her decision. The former presidential candidate reflects over the weekend and exchanges with various party experts.

“We are not sectarian”

During the group’s Monday afternoon meeting, an hour and a half before his floor speech, he finally announced that he was asking his troops to vote on the left’s no-confidence motion. No teeth grinding.

“A lot of us hear voters on the ground say ‘vote for him.’ We were all very connected when he explained his decision to us. We are not sectarian”, justifies deputy José Gonzales.

It is that the elected nurses understand very quickly that the maneuver will be all in their favor. The Nupes did not change their position despite some hesitation in late September by some in La France insoumise and therefore did not vote in favor of Marine Le Pen’s no-confidence motion. This text was largely rejected, with only 90 votes in favour, including only one vote from the left.

“A nupe that seems sectarian and a LR that is afraid”

The LRs had advertised the color very clearly in Sunday’s newspaper. 53 of them out of 62 elected confirmed that they did not want to “enter the theater of those who speculate on the collapse of the country.” Olivier Marleix, his leader, assured on the podium that he “would not hesitate to present one” “if the circumstances required it”, but none of his voices joined that of the Nupes or the RN.

Therefore, the political situation allows the Rassemblement to present itself as the only real opposition to Macronie.

“We have, on the one hand, Nupes who seem sectarian and, on the other hand, LR who are clearly very afraid of returning to the voters in the event of the overthrow of the government of Elisabeth Borne,” says Philippe Olivier, special adviser to Marine. Lepen.

RN deputy Thomas Ménagé sums it up differently and sees it as the end of the match between “the slapstick opposition” of La France insoumise and the LRs who “are in fact part of the majority”.

“The wind of the ball” for the government

The signal sent to the government is also clear. Although the Prime Minister imagined that the Nupes motion of censure was largely rejected, he lacked this text to overthrow it with only 50 votes. It is certainly a lot, but it is far from being totally unattainable.

“It shows Emmanuel Macron that the wind from the ball hasn’t gone too far and that he has to be very careful”, summarizes Sébastien Chenu.

Halfway, the left does not deny that Marine Le Pen’s political coup was a success. “We did not see it coming and we are a bit bored,” admits a Nupes deputy. Enough for one of the relatives of the patron saint of RN deputies to say, with a smile, that “the sequence is very successful.”
