The Lisbon Chamber approved a vote of condolence this Monday for the death of Adriano Moreira, as “his life has made everyone great”, a document voted against by PCP, BE and independently elected by the PS/Livre coalition .
“A great figure, a sage of our country who left us on his 100th birthday and therefore marks a whole era and a whole life, an extraordinary man”said Lisbon mayor Carlos Moedas (PSD), referring to Adriano Moreira, who died on Sunday at the age of 100.
At the public meeting of the College of Mayor and Aldermen, condolences were expressed by the Vice Mayor, Filipe Anacoreta Correia (CDS-PP), who recalled that Adriano Moreira was born in Grijó, in the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, district of Bragança, “but he came to Lisbon very young, where he spent his whole life”, referring to “a person who marked the country before and after April 25”.
Filipe Anacoreta Correia also remembered Adriano Moreira, a university professor and chairman of the CDS-PP, as “a Christian Democrat, a humanist, a sage” and praised the “intense civic activity, academically from the start and also politically”.
“He was respected by everyone, not only those who agreed with him, but he is undoubtedly a personality of our country”emphasizes.
“It is a sad time, but also an hour of gratitude, because his life has made us all great and his testimony, his presence and his intervention are indeed outstanding”also emphasized the vice president of the municipality of the capital, indicating that the condolences for the death of Adriano Moreira extend condolences to the family, the CDS-PP and the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon .
On the occasion of the celebration of his 100th birthday, which he marked this year, Adriano Moreira received the City’s Medal of Honor from the City Council of Lisbon.
The vote of regret for the death of Adriano Moreira was approved with a majority by the College of Mayor and Aldermen (consisting of 17 elected representatives), with four votes against, namely two by the PCP, one by the BE and one by the independent Cidadãos por Lisboa (elected by the PS/Livre), and votes for the others, namely seven from the PSD/CDS-PP leadership, five from PS and one from Livre.
PCP councilor João Ferreira justified the dissenting vote by considering that Adriano Moreira’s path was built in different contexts, stressing that “This diversity did not know, but does not include, the responsibilities he assumed as a member of the government during fascism, either as secretary of state or later as foreign minister, in a period marked by the beginning of the colonial war”.
taking into account that “What matters is to offer condolences to the family”Carlos Teixeira, from Livre, voted in favour, saying that: “There is a path that Adriano Moreira had in democracy that was fundamental, especially to help bring and integrate into the democratic regime what was an important part of the right in Portugal.”
However, Carlos Teixeira pointed out: “the deep political differences regarding the thinking and positions taken by Adriano Moreira during the Estado Novo and as Minister of Overseas, in particular the reactivation of the Tarrafal concentration camp”.
Adriano Moreira was Minister of Foreign Affairs during the dictatorship (1961-1963) and deputy and chairman of the CDS-PP already in democracy, always maintaining a link with the university and thinking about international relations.
On his 100th birthday on September 6, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Camões by the President of the Republic in June.
