Former President of the Republic Cavaco Silva this Sunday referred to Adriano Moreira as “one of the most important political thinkers in contemporary Portugal”, also highlighting his “legacy of genuine public service”.
“In teaching, he built a school around the ‘convergence of knowledge’ and from this knowledge produced a vast source of thought and reflection on Portugal, making him indisputably one of the most important political thinkers in contemporary Portugal,” wrote Anibal Cavaco Silva in a statement to Lusa’s desk.
The former prime minister remembers the “illustrious Portuguese” and the “proud Trás-os-Montes”, who later made an assessment of “his life of dedication to the public good as a politician, as an intellectual and as an academic”.
“As I said in 2009, Adriano Moreira belonged to ‘the lineage of those who remain true to his word and to his path’ – and in a time as fleeting as the one we have experienced, that alone is a reason for admiration and praise,” he emphasizes. .
Cavaco Silva believes that the former CDS leader and former minister “also knew how to communicate his thoughts in an extraordinarily clear way, until the end of his days, in a legacy of real public service”.
“I bow to the memory of Prof. Adriano Moreira. I leave a word of deep condolences to his family,” concluded the former head of state.
The former president of the CDS has died today at the age of 100, a party source confirms to Lusa.
Adriano Moreira was Minister of Foreign Affairs during the dictatorship (1961-1963) and deputy and chairman of the CDS-PP already in democracy, always maintaining a link with the university and thinking about international relations.
On his 100th birthday on September 6, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Camões by the President of the Republic in June.
