Marcelo: “He left us in peace, serene, in history, but above history as he has always lived”

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, thanked Adriano Moreira for “100 years of life, 100 years of work, 100 years of service to Portugal”.

“The Portuguese thank you for my vote for 100 years of life, 100 years of work, 100 years of service to Portugal,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said in a statement in Palácio de Belém, following news of Adriano Moreira’s death.

The president of the republic painted a portrait of the life of the former president of the CDS, considering that “it was everything or almost everything for 100 years”.

“Academic, master of civilians and military, fighter for freedom and democracy, later impossible reformer in dictatorship, yet, repeal of the Statute of the Indigenato. Exiled, returned, chairman of a political party, vice-chairman of the Assembly of the Republic, member of the state council,” he summed up.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa emphasized that Adriano Moreira “went through two regimes, traveled the world, left disciples, defended our language, our culture, our common homeland, always with intelligence, with genius, with tenacity, with Trás-os-Montes pride , proudly Portuguese”.

“Adriano Moreira left us two hours ago. In peace, serene, in history, but above history as he has always lived,” he said.

The former president of the CDS has died today at the age of 100, a party source confirms to Lusa.

Adriano Moreira was Minister of Foreign Affairs during the dictatorship (1961-1963) and deputy and chairman of the CDS-PP already in democracy, always maintaining a link with the university and thinking about international relations.

On his 100th birthday on September 6, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Camões by the President of the Republic in June.
