Aid measures should be “urgent, flexible and targeted at the most deprived and the middle class”

Speaking to journalists, on his way to a conference of the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation, in Almada, when asked about an apparent consensus between the government and PSD leader Luís Montenegro, on the contents of the package of measures to be approved on Monday-Friday Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said in the Extraordinary Council of Ministers that it was good that both agreed “on the urgency”.

“It’s good that urgency now means, it’s good that it means measures to think about the most deprived, but also the middle class,” said the head of state.

In line with what he had already defended on Saturday about the flexibility of measures depending on economic developments, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reiterated that the package should contain “a diverse range of measures”, “which should take effect quickly”. also taking into account “it is good to be flexible, to foresee adjustments in the future”.

The president of the republic also confirmed that he had spoken with Prime Minister António Costa about the package of measures, but declined to go into details.

“The conversation was circumstantial,” he said, adding that the prime minister is “doing what he has to do, which is between today and tomorrow.” [segunda-feira] work on the package”.

The president of the republic had already defended a balance on Saturday in the family support package that the government will announce, given that urgent action is needed, but measures must be adjusted month after month.

“In connection with the monitoring of economic developments, it is necessary to act urgently, but with caution,” he said in statements to journalists during a visit to the Lisbon Book Fair.

Asked about the package of measures to support families that the executive will announce Monday, the head of state shielded himself from the comments of the governor of the Bank of Portugal, Mário Centeno, who defended on Thursday that no measures should be taken. -cyclical.

“That’s what the governor of the Bank of Portugal said. On the one hand, there must be a shock intervention to compensate for the situation experienced in recent months and at the moment, and on the other hand, it must be monitored – I have repeated this – – Inflation. There are people who think that inflation can go down from October, November,” he said.

For Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the measures announced will be aimed at an “immediate shock effect”, but it is necessary to bear in mind that if inflation plummets from the end of the year, they will “need to be adjusted”.
