The President of the Liberal Initiative, João Cotrim Figueiredo, defended this Saturday that the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, he must be the first to “demand of himself” and impose the use of powers “much stricter” on the government.
Speaking to the Lusa agency on the sidelines of the “Liberal Routes” initiative, taking place in Cascais, Lisbon district, João Cotrim Figueiredo argued that, in the event of alleged incompatibilities between members of the government, the head of state should not have asked parliament to change the law “in a hurry, as if he were trying to exonerate those involved in legislative changes to make it more pleasant for these people, nor should he have demanded that this be done in a moment when there are too many cases in the public square”.
“I think there are too many circumstances in which the President of the Republic has had a chance to do what he said in his speech on October 5, which was demanding on the public authorities. I think the first to demand a lot of himself is the holder of the highest office in the nation, who demands that the use of government powers be done with much more rigor and with much greater utility for people’s concrete lives.” he.
In the Liberal leader’s analysis, it tried to “solve case after case on the knee that this situation of a law that no one understands”, given Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s request to parliament to “hurry” visit again. the incompatibilities law “makes no sense and refers to legislation that has been repealed”, so everything was “a little messed up”.
Asked about the direct similarities between the Lisbon City Council, when Fernando Medina was president, and the law firm Linklaters, Cotrim Figueiredo said the party is “trying to understand exactly what is at stake” because it only knows the issue in the papers. . and does not want to go into specifics on the matter. “This is another situation in the wake of several that have come to light in recent weeks about incompatibilities and therefore it clearly shows that, even if given the respective framework from a legal point of view, these situations raise many ethical questions. Doubts” , considered.
In the opinion of the chairman of the IL, these ethical issues “make very little difference to political practice, because the PS is used to bypassing these issues, especially now with an absolute majority”.
“They are being accused, they are arranging a propaganda maneuver to get the matter out of the spotlight and move to the next crisis. I want to give the Portuguese the confidence that it is possible to stop the PS from dominating both the public machine as the passage raindrops from all these cases of incompatibility,” he said.
