Nupes motion of censure: how the RN embarrassed leftist deputies

By voting in favor of the Nupes motion of censure, the National Group has provoked discord within the leftist coalition. “They screwed us,” admits a Socialist parliamentarian.

In the corridors of the National Assembly, the motion of censure by the Nupes against the government of Elisabeth Borne continues to be talked about. Several members of the PS, sometimes non-deputies, affirm that the elected officials would have requested the addition of a sentence to avoid at all costs the (surprise) vote of the National Assembly. A request that would not have followed effects.

According to François Kalfon, a member of the PS National Office, and Jean-Christophe Cambadélis, former first secretary, they even write on social networks that La France insoumise would have withdrawn a “positive mention” on immigration.

EELV, by a tweet from the president of his group in the National Assembly Cyrielle Chatelain, quickly denied, denouncing “fake news”.

“It is an invention of Kalfon and Cambadélis”

“It is a motion of identity, in our left-wing markers: social conflict and ecology,” Boris Vallaud, leader of the socialist group, confirms to BFMTV. “When you write a motion of censure, you are not writing a congress text. We made a mention of the left, with reference to the social movement,” says the communist deputy Sébastien Jumel, who recalls that the RN has voted many times with the presidential majority in against Nupes proposals.

Outside the microphone, a socialist deputy denies that, according to a rumor, he would have asked for a special mention to repel the voices of RN.

“I never said that. No one ever asked for a mention on immigration (…) It is an invention of Kalfon and Cambadélis within the framework of the PS congress.”

A PS deputy cited for having called for this phrase “shield” against the RN “was not even in the discussions”, according to Boris Vallaud. “Like all deputies, he had the text of the motion of censure in his hands before signing it and he signed it without asking for a change,” says one of his colleagues.

Various versions of the text.

On the side of La France Insoumise, Manuel Bompard denies it. “There was never any mention of immigration in any of the versions discussed,” he told BFMTV. This is confirmed by a PS deputy.

“There were five or six versions in the back and forth between us, like every time we write a common text,” he explains, stating that the text “toughened quite a bit with the claims of the left, in particular the Greens to add elements about climatic inertia.

“We put a lot of ecology into the motion, surely the RN would not vote because they never vote for texts that mention climate inaction,” adds Marie-Charlotte Garin, an EELV deputy who wrote the text.

“I’ve never heard of someone who wanted to add something even stronger to the RN and who would have been rejected. Otherwise, it didn’t come to me,” he continues.

“I don’t want to vote anything with the RN”

Even so, the surprise vote of the National Association has embarrassed several members of the Nupes. “When the RN announced that it would make its own motion… We are not suspicious. Lessons must be learned for the future,” warns a PS parliamentarian, who believes that the leftist deputies “should have been more careful.”

“I got into a colère de dire qu’on soit à deux doigts de faire tomber le gouvernement avec l’extrême droite.. On s’est fait avoir par le RN. Moi je ne veux rien voter avec le RN”, poursuit- The.

During Monday’s vote, an EELV deputy, Jérémie Iordanoff, even finally decided to abstain. “It is with a certain seriousness and in conscience that I refuse to mix my voice with those of the National Rally”, he justified.

“We had no interest” in the RN vote

On the other side of the hemicycle, in the seats of the extreme right, we do not believe in a coup by the rebels. “If the motion was worded in a more watered down way than we would have imagined, it was probably more to target LR and LIOT than us,” confesses a source within the National Rally group.

“We had no interest in them (the RN) voting with us because we knew it would not pass. It is terrible, we find ourselves in the middle of the socialist brawls and Macron recovers the thing”, laments a rebel. Lighten the text of the motion of censure? “We didn’t ask ourselves this question,” he says, “because they said they wouldn’t vote for it.”

“This motion of censure is not supposed to be directed against the RN but against the government and its bill on finances,” concludes an LFI deputy.

“We are not going to tie people up so that they do not vote for things. We wanted to make a motion focused above all on democracy”, she explains.

Thus, RN has achieved a “coup” by shaming several members of the Nupes, but a vote by the extreme right on a motion of censure by the left is not the first. The National Front already voted on a motion of censure presented by the PS… in 1986.
