From resignation to warrior vocabulary, Macron’s change of tone in the face of the energy crisis

During his press conference on the energy crisis on Monday, Emmanuel Macron was much more offensive than during his last speech during which the end of “abundance” and “recklessness” had sounded.

Emmanuel Macron changes his tone. The head of state appeared in a completely different light on Monday during his press conference following his exchange with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz from the Elysee Palace on the energy crisis. On August 24, commenting on global warming and the war in Ukraine in the preamble of the Council of Ministers back to school, the Head of State sounded the end of “abundance” and “recklessness”.

“This whole thing sounded like a sad song, it didn’t really make you want to get up,” analyzes BFMTV political columnist Matthieu Croissandeau.

But this Monday, the tone was quite different. “The Head of State was much more mobilizing, offensive, to the point of reconnecting with a martial vocabulary that we had heard during the health crisis”, analyzes Matthieu Croissandeau.

“We are at war,” declared the President of the Republic.

Sobriety is no longer a “wild word”

The tone has changed but not only. The background too. A word has broken into the vocabulary of most for a few weeks: sobriety. A term hitherto used more by the environmentalist Yannick Jadot or by the leader of rebel France, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, especially during the presidential campaign.

At that moment, Jean-Charles Colas-Roy, then a deputy for Isère and a referent of the Republic in the March for ecology, evoked a “wild card word”.

“The candidates must again clearly explain to the French what they are putting behind this keyword sobriety because, in reality, this implies profound changes, restrictions, even prohibitions regarding our lifestyles,” he declared. .
