“Yes, another world is possible”: after Lula’s victory in Brazil, LFI wants to believe in its possibilities

“Brazil shows us that there is still hope,” write many figures in La France this Sunday, who see in Lula a model of success for the left against the extreme right.

Lula’s victory in Brazil was hailed by socialists around the world. Jeremy Corbyn in the United Kingdom, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders in the United States… and Jean-Luc Mélenchon in France. “At a time when obscurantism is gaining ground in Europe, Brazil speaks to the world: yes, another world of justice and mutual aid is possible,” rejoices the former rebel presidential candidate.

In a tweet, Jean-Luc Mélenchon compared the photo taken with Lula during the Brazilian’s visit to Paris with that of Emmanuel Macron and Giorgia Meloni a few days ago in Rome.

The President of the Republic was then severely criticized on the French left for appearing with the new Italian far-right prime minister.

“Nothing can stop the strength of the people”

On social networks, many Nupe deputies hailed the victory of the left-wing candidate against the outgoing far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro. “Tonight, Brazil shows us that there is still hope. Another world is always possible,” so writes the rebel Louis Boyard.

“Despite the lawfare, the fake news, the manipulations to falsify the elections, the hatred and the brutality of all those who do not want social justice. The Brazilians demonstrated it today: nothing stops the strength of the people. Another world is possible” , his colleague Bastien Lachaud abounds.

“In the face of the ravages of conservative reaction and neoliberalism, only the social and ecological left is the alternative to change life,” finally writes Fatiha Keloua Hachi, socialist deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis.

No reaction from Le Pen and Zemmour

In France, deputies, elected representatives and executives from the presidential majority also sent congratulations to Lula. Beginning with the President of the Republic himself, who was, shortly after midnight, the first head of state to congratulate Lula on his election.

“Congratulations on your election that opens a new page in the history of Brazil. Together we will join forces to face the many common challenges and renew the bond of friendship between our two countries,” Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter.

“The best news for the planet today did not come from those who claim to defend it with sterile confrontation and violence. It came from those who were seeking reconciliation and the democratic path. And it came from Brazil”, adds the Minister of Agriculture, Marc Fesneau.

On the other hand, on Sunday night, neither Marine Le Pen nor Eric Zemmour had reacted on social networks to Jair Bolsonaro’s defeat against Lula.
