The Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, will give “benevolent instructions” to the police in the face of new demonstrations by farmers, asking them to “avoid violence”, in an interview with the newspaper La Dépêche du Midi, this Friday in October. 25.
“Farmers expect to live off the fruits of their labor and be treated fairly and equitably. They expect simplification and justice,” said Bruno Retailleau.
“If there are demonstrations, I will give polite instructions,” he added, specifying: “I also ask farmers to avoid violence, which would be unjustifiable.”
Unions call for a new national mobilization
Less than a year after the farmers’ revolt, which kept the country in suspense for several weeks, the majority unions called on Tuesday for a new national mobilization starting in mid-November.
This call occurs in the context of the negotiations for an EU-Mercosur free trade agreement denounced by the unions and the mobilizations underway in several departments.
During the mobilization of farmers at the beginning of the year, Bruno Retailleau’s predecessor, Gérald Darmanin, sent instructions of “great restraint” to the prefects at the end of January, asking them to only resort to the police as a “last resort”, while farmers The heavy-handed actions multiplied.
