“We are not repealing it, we are putting it back in its place”: Panot on the issue of the crime of glorifying terrorism

The president of the LFI group in the National Assembly believes that the LFI bill does not seek to repeal the crime of advocacy of terrorism, but rather to reintroduce it “in the press law.”

Guest on Sunday, November 24, on BFMTV within the framework of BFM Politique, Mathilde Panot, president of the LFI group in the National Assembly, returned to the controversy surrounding her party since the presentation of a law aimed at repealing the crime of apologizing for terrorism of the Penal Code, which according to them has accentuated “the instrumentalization of the fight against terrorism” against “freedom of expression.”

According to her, the mention “in the penal code” is essential to fully understand the content of this text.

“Before 2014 and the law that put this apology in the penal code, it was in the press law as an apology for war crimes, we denounced that it was in the penal code, we did not repeal it, but we put it back. press law. “We are putting it back in the right place,” he insists.

And the Val-de-Marne deputy added: “It is exploited and misused. […] It is not only LFI that says this, there is a report that denounces in France the exploitation of the crime of advocating terrorism against voices for peace. There is Marc Trevidic, a former anti-terrorism judge who pushed for this to be in the criminal code, and who today says that we need the courage to go back,” he argues.

“Undermining the rule of law”

According to Mathilde Panot, her personal case and that of MEP Rima Hassan, both prosecuted under this text, are not taken into account in this bill.

“It has nothing to do with our personal interests, it has to do with defending the rule of law. What many jurists from international organizations say is that this apology, in the way it is abused today, is an attack on freedom of expression”. expression and the rule of law,” he insists.

The text, presented by the deputy of the North Ugo Bernalicis, wants to eliminate this crime created by a 2014 law, considering that in this matter “the law of July 29, 1881 that deals with facts related to the crimes of apology of crime, “apology for war crimes, apology for crimes against humanity.”

The condemnations were added on Saturday among the Macronists and the right, and the Minister (LR) of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, considered it “difficult to do something more despicable.”

In the face of criticism, the leader of Insoumis, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, denounced “a new attack against the LFI coming from the extreme right and slavishly assumed by the political-media bureaucracy.” “Instead of making movies, read the text of the bill,” he said.
