Michel Barnier runs the risk of being faced with a motion of censure presented by the left in the National Assembly in December if he resorts to 49.3 to approve the budget. A motion of censure, if approved with the votes of the left-wing deputies and the National Group, would overthrow the current government.
“It would be a crisis of political life and there is nothing more desirable than avoiding it,” declared François Bayrou, president of Modem, on the set of BFMTV this Sunday, November 24. “The priority today is not to plunge the country into chaos,” he adds.
“A risk we should not take”
The mayor of Pau considers that it would not be “responsible” to present and vote on this motion of censure.
“I believe that there is no person in charge in the country who could wish for the fall of a government appointed two months ago,” he emphasizes, believing that it is “a risk that we should not take.”
Before adding: “A country like France, at the time of crisis we are experiencing, cannot afford successive falls of government. We have lived it, it led the French to change their Republic.”
François Bayrou refers to the transition from the Fourth Republic to the Fifth Republic in 1958. In fact, the Fourth Republic was marked by strong instability with 24 different governments between 1947 and 1958.
Thus, for him, the different political parties, including those in the opposition, are “co-responsible” for “what the French see and hear.” French people who, according to him, do not want “perpetual instability.” In fact, the opinion of the population is more decisive. According to a survey conducted by Ipsos for La Tribune Dimanche and published this Saturday, November 23, 53% of French people are in favor of the Barnier government’s censorship.
