COP 27: Macron believes that “the climate cannot be the adjustment variable” despite the war in Ukraine

Amid fears over global supplies, the president called on international leaders gathered for COP 27 not to “sacrifice” “climate commitments under the threat of energy.”

A call not to lose sight of the goal of drastically limiting greenhouse gas emissions. Despite the war in Ukraine, which is causing very serious tensions in energy and food matters, Emmanuel Macron launches his message from Sharm el-Sheikh in the middle of COP 27.

“Although the world is no longer the same, the climate cannot be the adjustment variable of the war launched by Russia on Ukrainian soil,” the president launched in a context of accelerated global warming.

Maintain the commitments of the previous COP

The head of state fears that global warming will take a backseat as inflationary pressures and the specter of a global recession are on the minds of the 120 world leaders gathered in Egypt.

However, alarming reports have multiplied since COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, when nearly 200 countries solemnly pledged to “keep alive” the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement, a fundamental treaty concluded in 2015.

At that time, world leaders committed to limiting warming to 1.5°C above the pre-industrial era, when humans began large-scale burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, or gas) that emit greenhouse gases. greenhouse responsible for global warming.

“We will not sacrifice our climate commitments”

Even if all countries kept their promises, which has never happened before, the world would be on a 2.4 degree rise trajectory by the end of the century. The latest IPCC report now expects a temperature rise of 2.8 degrees, a figure considered “catastrophic” by many scientists.

“We will not sacrifice our climate commitments under the energy threat. And therefore, all the commitments made by the countries must continue, in particular for the richest countries such as European countries, including France”, Emmanuel Macron advanced.

The message is directed in particular at the United States and China, the two biggest polluters in the world, which are experiencing a strong resurgence of tension. Chinese President Xi Jinping will not come and American Joe Biden is expected to pass shortly after the November 8 midterm elections.
