The first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, called on his internal opponents on Tuesday to “reject the caricatured and hurtful debate” as the Marseille congress in January approaches, lamenting an “obsession with Jean-Luc Mélenchon”.
The party of the rose held a national council at its headquarters in Ivry-sur-Seine, during which the representatives of the seven “general contributions” deposited for the congress took the floor.
“People are waiting for us to be in combat”
In his closing speech, Olivier Faure advocated the cause of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes), created for the legislative elections with LFI, PCF and EELV in May, and which allowed the Socialists to obtain 31 deputies despite 1.7% of its candidate Anne Hidalgo in the April presidential elections.
“People are expecting us to be in combat now,” and not in 2027, over super-profits, ecology, inflation or even pensions, which in their eyes allow Nupes to exist, he has said.
“When you want to fight for the people, you have to find the means, be more numerous and accept that we are not all equal in number”, said Olivier Faure to justify being with LFI, in radicalism considered counterproductive or even dangerous by its detractors.
“Mélenchon, you talk about it much more than I do”, smiled the deputy from Seine-et-Marne, “it is an obsession of Mélenchon for you”. But “we must reject the caricature and hurtful debate,” Olivier Faure asked.
